Appledore, Devon

Earlier this year we took a drive up the coast from where we were staying in Devon up to Appledore. A quaint old fishing village near Bideford.

The first thing we noticed when we left the car were the very colourful houses in the Main Street. This was where we started to explore. The road may seem a bit narrow for a main street. However I expect there wasn’t too much traffic back in those days. It was probably just pedestrians and the odd horse or donkey drawn carts the fishermen used. The town has expanded since those days but we kept to the old part of town

These were a few of the oddities we spotted on our meanderings.

We walked through the old town to the beach. The tide was out, but from there we were able see over the bay to Westward Ho!, apparently the only town in the UK with an exclamation mark in its name……

Turning back towards the town along the coast footpath we spotted Instow on the other side of the estuary. The lifeboat was moored out at sea, I guess that was because there is deeper water there. Moving our gaze along the coast we spotted the town of Instow.

Then, back on this side of the estuary, we saw the remains of the old boatyard and the harbour. The newer part of the town can be seen in the background.

All in all It was a very pleasant and most enjoyable day. Just wandering around and imagining how things used to be. I would imagine life was much simpler but harder then.
